Suicide Prevention Awareness - Sensibilisation à la prévention du suicide 1 As Premier, I congratulate the New Brunswick Police Association on their successful publication of the 34th Annual Crime Prevention Guide. This year's Crime Prevention Guide focuses on Suicide Prevention Awareness and is designed to help prevent suicides by recognizing the signs and behaviors of children and adults that may be at risk. The New Brunswick Police Association's efforts in collaborating with our partners in suicide prevention will help create a supportive environment for New Brunswickers so they know that, even in their darkest hours, there is always hope. Our government believes that all New Brunswickers deserve to live in safe and supportive homes and communities. This is being achieved through initiatives and programs that provide education awareness and training to improve our response to those in need. The members of the New Brunswick Police Association provide excellent service to the people of New Brunswick by providing support and contributing to safety and crime prevention in our Province. Our government believes that the continued support and cooperation of the New Brunswick Police Association and other similar organizations assist in achieving these goals for the betterment of New Brunswickers. I want to take this opportunity to thank the New Brunswick Police Association and its membership for their work and commend them for their role in keeping New Brunswickers safe and informed. Suicide Prevention Awareness - Sensibilisation à la prévention du suicide 7 On behalf of the 400+ members of the New Brunswick Police Association, I am very pleased to introduce our 34th Annual Crime Prevention Guide, which tackles the very difficult subject of Suicide Prevention Awareness. The intent of this publication is to offer information and resources in order to prevent anyone from taking their own life, by recognizing the signs and behaviors of children and adults that may be at risk. This publication is made possible by the generous contributions and support of many individuals, business owners and organizations throughout the province, and we are very grateful for their contributions that allow us to continue to publish our annual publications that reach New Brunswick’s citizens and educate our communities on a variety of important crime prevention issues. Proceeds are also used to support NBPA activities and further our Police Association’s community involvement and support, including a $5,000 donation to the Kids Help Phone, which provides 24/7 support and counselling for children to get the help that they need. The NBPA publishes an Annual Crime Prevention Guide to educate the public on important community concerns. This 34th Annual Crime Prevention Guide targets Suicide Prevention Awareness and is designed to help prevent suicides by recognizing the signs and behaviors of children and adults that may be at risk. Last year, young people in New Brunswick reached out to the Kids Help Phone over 35,000 times; that was 15,000, or 74%, more contacts than in 2019, as a result of COVID-19 challenges. Suicide Prevention Awareness - Sensibilisation à la prévention du suicide 15 BNPP REGIONAL POLICE FORCE SERVICE DE LA POLICE RÉGIONALE BNPP www.bnpppolice.ca As part of the National Police Week, May 9 to 15, 2021, members of the BNPP Regional Police organized a competition through the three primary schools in the region. In order to participate, the students had to answer a questionnaire related to the safety measures they must respect when using their bicycles. Each school was awarded with 3 bicycles and 5 helmets. Durant la Semaine Nationale des Policiers du 9 mai au 15 mai 2021, la Police régionale BNPP a organisé un concours dans trois écoles de la région. Les élèves devaient répondre à un questionnaire concernant les règles de sécurité en bicyclette. Trois bicyclettes ainsi que cinq casques de bicyclettes ont été décernés aux élèves gagnants dans chacunes écoles. Suicide Prevention Awareness - Sensibilisation à la prévention du suicide 21 FREDERICTON POLICE FORCE FORCE POLICIÈRE DE FREDERICTON www.fredericton.ca/en/fredericton-police The Fredericton Police Force, in collaboration with Horizon Health Network, the City of Fredericton, and Communication Centre, have worked together over the past year to create the Livestreaming Body Worn Camera project. This project through the Axon body worn cameras allows the Mobile Crisis team to livestream the officers’ interactions with individuals in mental health crises. Having mental health services livestreaming a situation while they are on their way to the scene provides valuable awareness to best help the individual in need. The Mobile Crisis team can also view the livestreaming and provide over-the-phone consults to the officer when they are not available to provide on-scene support. La Force policière de Fredericton, en collaboration avec le Réseau de santé Horizon, la Ville de Fredericton et le Centre de communication, ont travaillé ensemble au cours de la dernière année pour créer le projet de diffusion en direct de caméra d’intervention. Dale Pollock. Cst. Pollock passed away suddenly at home on August 9, 2021. Cst. Pollock was later promoted posthumously to the rank of Corporal. We continue to remember Dale and strive to carry on with some of the humility, compassion, and fine police work that Dale brought every day. 33 Suicide Prevention Awareness - Sensibilisation à la prévention du suicide Teens talk, but is Canada listening? ach week Kids Help Phone connects with thousands of young people, helping to reduce their distress, and building their self-confidence and emotional strengths as they navigate through their most challenging moments of need. But we know there are so many more who need help and aren’t reaching out. That’s why we created Teens Talk. Using data from our annual National Teen Survey, we’ve compiled this report for two reasons: 1) To better understand the challenges teens are facing and 2) To engage Canadians in an important dialogue about how we can make our country safer, healthier and friendlier to young people. We learned a lot from our 2015 survey, but it also raised a lot of questions. How are the issues experienced by teens inter-connected? What factors influence the likelihood that a teen will experience a problem? What prevents teens from reaching out? As we explored the results of our 2016 survey, we found some very concerning connections. We learned that teens who experience issues with their body or self-image, or violence at school or home, are at least twice as likely to seriously consider suicide compared to the general teen population. We also learned that the online search habits of teens reveals a lot about their well-being. In fact, it’s a primary indicator of the likelihood that they are experiencing a problem of some kind. So while they may not speak to anyone, their fingers are doing a lot of talking. The question is, are we listening? Understanding how youth connect to each other and to their support networks, as well as the barriers they face to seeking help, will be absolutely crucial to how we, as a country, can create solutions to the biggest challenges that our teens face today. Nous les aidons aussi à renforcer leur confiance en eux et à développer leurs forces sur le plan affectif au moment où leurs besoins et leurs défis sont les plus grands. Cependant, il reste encore beaucoup de jeunes qui ont besoin d’aide, mais qui ne tendent pas la main. C’est pourquoi nous avons créé La parole aux jeunes. À l’aide des données tirées de notre Sondage national annuel auprès des adolescents, nous avons rédigé le présent rapport pour deux raisons : 1) pour mieux comprendre les défis auxquels les adolescents font face et 2) pour établir un important dialogue pancanadien afin de trouver des moyens de rendre notre pays plus sûr, plus sain et plus accueillant pour les jeunes. Nous avons certes énormément appris de notre sondage 2015, mais il a fait naître une foule de questions. Comment sont interreliés les enjeux auxquels sont confrontés les adolescents ? Quels facteurs influent sur la probabilité qu’un adolescent soit aux prises avec un problème ? Qu’est-ce qui empêche les adolescents de demander de l’aide ? Lorsque nous avons analysé notre sondage 2016, nous avons constaté des liens des plus inquiétants. Nous avons appris que les adolescents qui ont des problèmes d’image de soi ou d’image corporelle, ou encore qui ont été victimes de violence à la maison ou à l’école étaient au moins deux fois plus susceptibles d’envisager sérieusement le suicide que les adolescents en général. Nous avons également découvert que les habitudes de recherche en ligne des adolescents étaient très révélatrices de leur niveau bien-être. En fait, c’est un précieux indicateur permettant d’identifier qu’un jeune est susceptible d’éprouver un problème quelconque. Donc, même s’ils ne parlent à personne, leurs doigts transmettent bien des messages. Mais sommes-nous à l’écoute ? Voilà la question. En tant que société, nous devons être en mesure de comprendre comment les jeunes communiquent entre eux et avec leur réseau de soutien et être conscients des obstacles auxquels ils sont confrontés pour ensuite trouver et mettre en place les outils et ressources nécessaires pour y répondre de façon adéquate.
