I am very grateful to the citizens and businesses who have sponsored and supported our Community Guides over the years, and who have continued to help us prevent crime and educate one another. In my 29 years of policing I have always believed that education is a key component in helping to prevent violence and crime in our communities and it is the NBPA’s intention that by sharing the information in this publication, we can prevent further occurrences of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Drugs. The New Brunswick Police Association hosted their 22nd Annual Benefit Hockey Game at the historic J. Louis Levesque Arena in Moncton on December 16, 2016. It was a real “Battle of the Badges” starring the “NBPA All Stars” from across New Brunswick playing against local “RCMP All Stars,” and were joined by a world famous Don Cherry Impersonator and the one and only “Ricky G” from Hollywood California as referee, for another great night of family entertainment. The game was a tremendous success again with proceeds raised for the community activities of the NB Police Association, including a generous game-night donation of $10,000 to Food Depot Alimentaire, Southeastern New Brunswick’s Food Distribution Centre, presented in memory of Moncton’s fallen RCMP officers who were killed in the line of duty in June 2014. L’Association des policiers du Nouveau-Brunswick a tenu sa 22e partie annuelle de hockey de bienfaisance à aréna l’historique J.-L. Levesque à Moncton, le 16 décembre 2016. DUI Awareness - Sensibilisation à la conduite avec facultés affaiblies 21 When it comes to drinking and driving, this applies equally to men, women, youth and the younger generation. A lot of awareness is being done about this and the reason is quite simple: it is one of the main causes of accidents and deaths that can be prevented on our roads. As much as possible, try to plan your return home early in the evening, whether it's a designated driver, a taxi or a driving service. Ideally, leave your car at home. Penalties in relation to impaired driving are serious and can cause you problems in different spheres of your life. Also not to forget, having a vehicle in your care or control while impaired is treated within the meaning of the law at the same level as driving. Please do not drive impaired. Lorsqu’on parle d’alcool au volant, ceci concerne autant les hommes, les femmes, les jeunes et les moins jeunes. Il y a beaucoup de sensibilisation qui se fait à ce sujet et la raison est bien simple : il s’agit de l’une des principales causes d’accidents et de décès qui peut être évitables sur nos routes. Dans la mesure du possible, planifier votre retour à la maison au début de la soirée, que ce soit un conducteur désigné, un taxi ou un service de raccompagnement. Idéalement, laisser votre auto à la maison. Les sanctions par rapport à la conduite avec facultés affaiblies sont sérieuses et peuvent vous causer des problèmes dans diverses sphères de votre vie. Aussi à ne pas oublier, avoir la garde et le contrôle d’un véhicule avec les capacités affaiblies est traité au sens de la loi au même niveau que la conduite. SVP, ne conduisez pas avec les facultés affaiblies. DUI Awareness - Sensibilisation à la conduite avec facultés affaiblies 39 The MPF has a zero tolerance approach to drinking and driving all year long and each member would not like to see someone’s family affected by a drunk driving arrest or by a serious accident caused by drinking and driving. Impaired driving, by both drug and alcohol, remains to be one of the leading causes for serious death and injury accidents across Canada. Unfortunately our Miramichi Community has suffered from the effects of drinking and driving fatalities. With cell phones being readily available, the motoring public has been very helpful in reporting suspected impaired drivers. The MPF received 202 calls reporting suspected impaired operation of motor vehicles this year. Although not all these calls led to an arrest, the MPF encourage the motoring public to continue calling to report drivers who appear to be a safety concern on the road. We want you to call 911, we will respond, we will do our best to stop the vehicle, and collectively we will make our roads safer for all. Impaired driving is not socially acceptable. It applies to all motor vehicles including boats, ATVs and snowmobiles. Not only can it cause a loss of life but it invokes other sanctions. Any impaired driving arrest can involve a tow bill, a trip to the police station, a drug or breathalyzer test, your finger prints and photograph being taken, an immediate 90 day license suspension, a court trip with, upon conviction, a minimum of a $1000 fine, and loss of your drivers’ license for at least one year. There is mandatory jail time for any second offenses, and a Criminal Record which might affect your job or your ability to travel. The MPF also has a very active partnership with the local TADD group which is mostly comprised of NBCC students. This group of dedicated students do their utmost to promote the avails of drinking and driving. They host functions of their own at NBCC, they have partnered with the MPF by conducting information sharing at check-stop operations and they have packed groceries at Sobeys to further their message. PLEASE DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE Le SPM a une tolérance zéro en ce qui concerne l’alcool au volant pendant toute l’année et chaque membre de notre personnel ne voudrait certainement pas voir la famille de quelqu’un touchée par une arrestation de conduite en état d’ébriété ou par un accident grave causé par l’alcool au volant. La conduite avec facultés affaiblies, tant par les drogues que par l’alcool, demeure l’une des principales causes de décès et de blessures graves par accident au Canada. Malheureusement, notre communauté de Miramichi a grandement souffert des conséquences de l’alcool au volant. Étant donné l’accessibilité facile des téléphones cellulaires, le public a été très utile pour signaler les conducteurs soupçonnés de conduite avec facultés affaiblies. Le SPM a reçu 202 appels concernant des conducteurs soupçonnés de conduire une voiture sous l’influence de l’alcool, cette année seulement. Il y a une peine d’emprisonnement obligatoire pour toute autre infraction, et un Casier Judiciaire qui pourrait affecter votre emploi ou votre capacité à voyager. Le SPM a également un partenariat très actif avec le groupe local TADD, qui est principalement composé d’étudiants du NBCC. Ce groupe d’étudiants dévoués font tout leur possible pour promouvoir les méfaits de l’usage de l’alcool au volant. An eight-team tournament of Police, Fire, Sheriffs, and Correctional Officers was held during Police Week; and two games with Special Olympic athletes were held during the winter season. This two-day ride pays an annual tribute to fallen emergency service members.
